Daily Poem: April 1
In the office
Welcome to the 25th annual National Poetry Month! For more ways to explore and celebrate, check out these tips from your hosts, The Academy of American Poets. Instead of blogs, I’ll be sending a new poem along every day this month. I hope you enjoy them!
In the office
Sitting in this office is not unlike
signing someone’s petition
outside the subway,
or having trouble
remembering a dream.
I light a candle to mask
the taste of dust
or disinfectant,
and I tend to smile,
in either case.
Although sometimes the shape
feels like censure.
Who’s flapping her wings at a time like this?
Who’s exercising, even?
Time and intent are the shower, draining—
An anchor slammed to the deck
in a cartoon I’ve seen before.
I sit like a temple mound
on the spine of the Andes
and let the week fly by like Mesoamerica.
No whole memory is worth its wait.
