Daily Poem: April 27

All the news that’s fit

All the news that’s fit

Luckily, the newspaper
pulled out of the junk drawer
is today’s.

Its headlines are skimmed
to the dinging of an electronic bell
in a long-forgotten appliance.

A plane went missing in the Bermuda Triangle
for the first time in as long as anyone can remember.

Former political prisoners were photographed in costume
in an effort to raise money for a children’s hospital.

The solicitor general insisted that no one
in the countryside was left without oxygen.

Speaking of which,
I finally had that dream where the ghost sits on your chest

and strangles you,
and you cry out a little
in real life,

wide awake and staring down
the gun barrel of history,
the night before the first

dog day of summer.
